 If the world were normal, I wouldn’t be able to loll about all day sobbing and intermittently working through this breakup, and my depression uniform of Hanes sweatpants would barely pass for sleazecore. Instead, I’d have to put on my stupid little ankle boots, get on the C train, show up at work, and not terrify my coworkers by wondering aloud whether I’ll ever really be loved. Sure, I wish I could hit the bars with 15 to 20 of my closest friends right now, but in exchange I’ll take the peace of being able to honor my feelings in whatever form they come (even if it means I log for a pitch meeting with puffy eyes and extreme bedhead).

Luckily, my vaccinated status allowed me to cry, drink, and listen to Bonnie Raitt on my best friend’s couch instead of going through it alone, but when all the margaritas were gone and the tears were dry, I found myself wondering, Bradshaw-style: Had I accidentally found the best time to get my heart broken? I’d managed to fit a whole relationship into my pandemic year, from start to end, and while getting to know a new person intimately while being unable to, well…, go anywhere was undeniably rough, I welcomed the seclusion and lack of public scrutiny once our breakup rolled around. (Don’t perceive me, if you will.)
